What Documents Do You Need for a UK Student Visa?

The United Kingdom is home to some of the world’s top universities, offering high-quality education and global exposure. But before you pack your bags, you’ll need to get your UK Student Visa—and that means gathering the right documents.

Here’s a complete list of documents required to apply for a UK Student Visa (Tier 4/Student Route Visa):

1. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

This is a unique reference number issued by your UK university once you’ve accepted your offer and met the admission conditions. It contains important details about your course and sponsorship.

Make sure the details in your CAS match your application form exactly!

 2. Valid Passport

You’ll need a valid passport (or travel document) with at least one blank page for your visa. It should be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay.

 3. Financial Proof

You must show that you can afford:

  • Tuition fees for the first year, and
  • Living expenses (£1,334/month in London or £1,023/month outside London, for up to 9 months).

Bank statements must show funds held for at least 28 consecutive days.

4. English Language Proficiency

Most students need to prove their English level through a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS, PTE, or others accepted by UKVI.

Some universities may assess your language level themselves, especially if you’re applying for degree-level study.

5. Tuberculosis (TB) Test Results

If you’re applying from Nepal or a country where TB screening is required, you must provide a certificate from an approved clinic.

 6. Academic Documents

You must submit:

  • Transcripts and certificates of previous qualifications
  • Any documents listed on your CAS

These should be in English or officially translated.

 7. Parental Consent & Birth Certificate (for applicants under 18)

If you’re under 18, provide:

  • A letter of consent from both parents (or legal guardian)
  • Your birth certificate or legal guardian certificate

8. Visa Application Form (online)

Fill out the UK Student Visa application on the official UK government website and pay the visa fee.

Visa Fee: £490 (as of 2025)
 Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776/year

 9. Passport-Sized Photograph

In some cases, you may be asked to provide a recent passport-size photo meeting UKVI guidelines.

10. ATAS Certificate (if required)

If your course involves sensitive subjects (usually at postgraduate level), you may need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.

 Final Tips:

  • Double-check the UKVI document checklist before submission.
  • Prepare certified translations for any non-English documents.
  • Ensure your name and details match across all documents.
